...in wood and iron.

When I saw this near the Antwerp Central Station I was immediately attracted to the textures.

Want to know what it is? Look here and here.

This group of 9 elephant statues, made by South-African artist Andries Botha, form a queue that seems to be marching towards the entrance of the Antwerp Zoo. They were put there for the "O dierbaar Antwerpen" festival. The Dutch word "dierbaar" means precious, so the title could simply be translated as "Oh precious Antwerp". The first four letters of the word, however, are "dier" which means animal. And yes, the theme actually is about the city as a home for animals.

Another reason why these statues have been put here is that the Zoo participates in an elephant breeding programme, and very recently a new elephant bull has arrived from the Rotterdam Zoo, Alexander. He'll be staying in Antwerp until September... well, he has three females to choose from ;o)).

Mooie foto Frank !

Dany

Hi Frank,

I never would have guessed that this is a close up from the wooden elephants! :)
Indeed great terxtures and details! I like how everything is in random order. Very impressive way to create art. :)

Well done
Constantinos

a great abstract image, with lovely tones, textures and light, an abstract like this works best for me if I see the or 'know' the context, so thanx, M, (*_*)

Very good close up of the elephant Frank. The details in the textures are good. Well done. Thanks for the workshop images.

Yassou Frank,

I saw the ws and I must say that it is impressive artwork! Your shot is excellent, focusing on the detail of the statues, which is an excellent pattern and the wood has good texture. Nicely exposed and sharp.

I thought it might be payches on a wall or a roof. Never thought of elephants!! Maybe if I had 1,000 guesses - no, maybe not!

Patchwork is a good title Frank, you can see so many colours and textures all nailed together. It looks a very dierbaar display.
Well done MF
Janice

Hi Frank

I like the repetition & textures of the numerous wood blocks. The tight framing works well here. Tfs!

Een kunstwerkje met veel ogen; het geheel gaat spoedig praten en neemt de macht over.
(Ik zal zo mijn pillen maar weer nemen).
Mooi werk Frank
