We are so small between the stars, so large against the sky,
and lost among the subway crowds I try to catch your eye.

by Leonard Cohen, last stanza of the song Stories of the Street from the album Songs of Leonard Cohen.

This is another posting in my series of photos dedicated to and drawn from lines and songs of Leonard Cohen.

The same way that we can find comfort in crowds, we can find order in distortion. This was a shaky fuzzy color snapshot. But I felt it needed to be a lot fuzzier and a lot greyer to convey what I wanted it to. So after rotating and cropping I converted to black and white, added 24% gaussian blur before resizing for the web. There is no symbolic significance intended in the fact that it was taken on St. Valentine's Day - except maybe that people didn't look any happier than on any other day of the year, a thought Cohen could possibly identify with.

I love the way you feel the people looking / staring at you, without seeing them in focus... Makes you feel like you're doing something a bit naughty by taking their picture :)

I think this image goes rather well with L. Cohen's song ;-) Apart from that I love the movement blur and the grain the chice of b&w truly tells the story of our busy city lifes! Always on the run, always about to be late, and so many times an alien amongst the crowds.
Great composition that really tells a story.

very poetic, not the greatest of pictures. My reasons are that while you took this picture the camera movement is moving the wrong way, up is not a good direction, i like no movement but thats just MIO, thank you for note

Très bonne composition Per. Cette image montre bien l'anonymat des personnes dans la foule déambulante du métro. Le traitement apporté à l'image ajoute à cette perception de façon très appropriée. J'aime bien. Bien vu!

Beautiful threatment made to this anonymous crowd. Very vivid action.

I like the motion blur and the grainy black and white effect Per, well done.

This reminds me of when I used to work in London; the daily grind of rushing for the subway, and then the main line train for home, where I usually slept for a while. The shaky hand, and the added blur certainly adds more feeling to the atmosphere of this scene. The grain works well, and so does the black and white. Even the double exposed train time schedule sign adds to the effect of the hussle and bustle of daily life at this station. Very good journalistic photo, and fits well with the words from Cohen.

Nice work Per has the nostalgic look of an old black and white news reel picture. Well done.

Beautiful work, Per. Being a commuter myself I understand the mood you created for this shot. I like everything about it: grain, blurryness, b&w, yes even that! Excellent, TFS.

When you are rushing in the subway to work, everyghing IS a blur to you...just as your photo is.Think back this morning. Can you remember any of the faces you saw? Did you really see any? Excellent work, Per of the way it really is in this fast paced life of rush, rush, rush.....:O)
