[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This elderly man suffered from a broken hip after tripping over a wire, and was hospitalised for several months. It will have major consequences for his future, as his mobility is seriously reduced. The house he lived in for forty-six years, that he built, changed, repaired, extended, where he raised his family, that he came home to after a full day's work, will be sold soon.
Here he first encounters his new apartment where he will spent his further years along with his faithful, caring wife, looking ahead to... new horizons.

Meet my father, aged 84.

Cropped original picture (to adjust metering, I quickly measured in a darker corner to avoid overlighting the picture due to the large window behind, there was no time for proper spotmeting or so)
Adjusted levels to get rid of details through window.
Reduced color depth to 1BPP.

hi Walter
this is a very deep and impressive photo with sadness and hope - 2 in 1. The light and contrasting is perfect. but i still would like to see something through that window.
best regards
Lelde

Hello walter,
Very strong imagelanguage. he title fits exactly and gives me a look inside the way you think. The overexposed background is very functional:"what will the future bring?'. Expectations that will not come out...
Very well done,
Ruut

very powerfull even without the notes it goes into the heart strait and sharp

Hallo Walter,
Subtiele en daarom ook prachtige weergave van een diepmenselijk tafereel. De kleurbewerking en de compositie doen ons als kijker perfect aanvoelen wat je met deze foto wil uitdrukken. Tegelijk persoonlijk en universeel...
TFS & groeten,
Erik

Walter,

This is a strong, thought provoking image. When I read your note, it became inspirational. One must go on in life. I know the sadness of being uprooted from a place you have loved for years. With time, one realizes it's not the actual structure of a home in which we live that is important, but the people and love inside that home that make it a home.

The black and white of your photo accentuates the situation as all the details are there for us in "black and white". I think your background suits the mood here. There is nothing there.... they have lost their former home. But the light can represent hope. Hope for a healthy future.

thanks for sharing this moving photo and story,

Lisa

Dear Walter,

Extremely touching- so well expressed. A fine tribute.

Unfortuantely, this is a very common "life-changing" event. I wish your dad all the best.
