Puddle... in "my street"
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
I wanted to contribute to the friday-theme "In my street". When I saw this reflection in a puddle this morning, I thought it to be a suiting image.
The cobblestones are on the pavement, the street is asphalted. At this crossing (notice the white line) the pavement is brought to street level to facilitate handicapped people. Unfortunately, they didn't take in account that the gutter had to to have a good slope to let the rainwater flow to the sewers. So with every rainshower we have there's a puddle.
The house on the right "de Ghulde Roose" (the Golden Rose) dates from about 1550, and was erected on the order of the landlord of that (rather large) site, the knight Happaert (yes, knights really existed ;-)). He had his house further down the street, and that also is still standing. This smaller house was occupied by surgeons, a hospital was (and is) nearby. The place was very strategical as it then was an access road from one of the main gates to the city centre, so manier famous historical figures must have passed, such as the duke of Alva.
In the last century it served as an "estaminet" or pub, but since the late 1960-ies it remained empty and dilapidation started as the owner refused to repair any damage. After a long struggle in court, an organisation acquired the house but it wasn't properly restored until 1996. Now it is a gem.
I don't have that much data on the other house, only that it is from 1856 and in "Second Empire" style. It's huge with additional buildings beyond the inner court, and very luxueus. I was told that at the time it was famous for it's parties. This house too remained empty and neglected (I heard that vandals stripped it little by little of its rich interior like chimneys in pink marble and walls covered in gold-leather). At this time it houses several firms that keep a luxury office in there.
Adjusted contrast, flipped vertically, added border and signature. |

Amazing how that puddle renders this clear a reflection, Walter. It almost looks like a mirror. I love the deep saturation caused by the wet street & pavement. I'm not too fond of the white line, though. Why not crop it off, you'd lose only a small portion of the houses?
Anyway, TFS
Hi Walter !
I like the idea. Very well executed and stunning results.
Best regards, Daniel
