...either let it start raining, or make those dark clouds disappear!

The weather this past few weeks hasn't been all that good over here. Not that it rains so much, but it's not as warm as it should be, and we generally have overcast skies.

When I saw the sun trying to break through these dark rainclouds I wanted to capture the colours of the sky... and I experimented with exposure compensation, as these light conditions are bound to trick the light meter of a P&S camera...

Tech talk

For this shot I used a compensation of -1.5 f-stop. I think it emphasizes the darkness of this threatening rain cloud, while still leaving enough light of the sun.

Croppity-crop, very little though.

Downsized for TL at 1200 dpi in one step, then reduced dpi to 72 again. Applied USM 18, 40, 0 and 150, 0.3, 0.

Slightly boosted saturation (120).

Added Frank's framing.

Nice moody skyscape\cloudscape Frank. Love the muted colours, looks like an oil painting. Know what you mean about the weather over here its more like November. Great capture though. TFS

Peter

Hi Frank,
You did well with this one and the sun is well exposed and controlled. Not only that, you have some slight rays in view. Excellent work.

Could you write me and explain this resizing technique. You mention often a 3 step method.
Thanks.

Mike

Very dark and sombre Frank, with the sun wanting to shine its light through the clouds. Good exposure and details. Well done.

Wow, dramatic (and even evil) it is in this way and really beautiful ! A darker picture but that's giving the mood !
(And then I see this one at work on an old screen, like to see it tonight on my own flatscreen:-))

I don't know if it ended in rain or in sunshine, but the moment in between was seductively captured. Well done Frank!!

Ana

Very dramatic sky Frank. I like it's rich chocolate colors (ok maybe I'm influenced a bit by the last picture you've posted). Composition with the sun peaking out and those ray of lights is great. Sometimes I find your custom framing a bit distracting (for certain shots) but here it is complementary. TFS.

This sky really does have a wow factor Frank. The darkness of the image is very dramatic. Good job on the stopping down on the f-stop as the sun isn't overexosed. I must remember this tip. Thanks for that. The sumptuous brown and beige colours are perfect. Love it. One of my favourites.

A nice dark one Frank, I like it. The clouds are impressive!
Best regards
Guy

Very moody sky, lovely capture, nicely composed and great overall lighting.

Looks very much like an old painting with the underexposure. Nice dark tones, with just enough orange to create some contrast. Well done!

This sky has a punch to it for sure and you captured it. The sun is almost like an eye glaring at you in a not very friendly way. Clouds are wonderful subjects. Great, Frank...:O)

Ah well, this really describes the way I have been feeling about the summer recently. Good to see that someone can put it into words and pictures. It looks as if a storm is brewing though. Very atmospheric!!!(Get the pun?)

Very intriguing colours in this sunset picture, Frank. Not certain I have ever seen one like this with so much chocolate brown in it. The sun trying to peak out of the clouds is well captured. I also like the silhouette of the trees and small hill at the bottom of the picture. Well done!!!

P.S. I will try to send you some of our very nice weather. The summer here has been amazing with more days over 30 degree C. than we have seen in a long time and barely enough rain (actually our farmers are complaining about the lack of rain).

Hi Frank,
Great capture. It looks quite mysterious with the small sun through the dark clouds. I like the colours as well. Good work.

Great shot Frank, very fine atmosphere. Only the Wolfman is missing! :P

I like how you captured the sun between these angry clouds! Nice work.

Good evening Frank!
Super composition, great sky with fantastic clouds. Very good capture. Thanks for posting
best regards
ziggy

An interesting pic Frank! I thought this was the moon behind those clouds based on how dark the sky and foreground are. Great capture of the clouds though!

I hope you had a wonderful New Year's Eve. We were socked in some horrible fog on the beach in Florida, I'll post some pics of it soon.

Have a good week my Belgian friend!
