A partial view of the Rila Monastery in western Bulgaria. What you see here is the Nativity Church and its cupolas , the inclusion of the onlookers is purely intentional , of course .The view is from the top balcony of the monks 'residential complex ( 300 rooms ) that surrounds the church and tower ( seen between the domes ).
A brief history : The monastery was founded in AD 927 by Ivan Rilski , a leader of a monastic colony of hermits. Originally built 3 kms away it was moved to its present location in 1335, plundered in the early 15th century it was restored in 1469 after the relics of Ivan Rilski were returned from Veliko Tarnovo .Under adverse conditions the monastery helped to keep Bulgarian culture and religion alive during centuries of rule by the Turks who destroyed the monastery several times. In 1883 a fire engulfed nearly all the buildings . Donations were received so rebuilding commenced within a year ---clearly indicating the monastery's importance and reverence to the Bulgarian people .Proclaimed as a natioanl museum in 1961 by the Bulgarian government and included on UNESCO's list of World Heritage 2 years later.
It is the largest and most reknown monastery in Bulgaria and the most revered holy place in the country ,also it is one of the most visited attractions for Bulgarian pilgrims and tourists alike. Not to be missed !
Thank you for looking ,
Carol

It looks unreal, such a contrast betwixt colours of stone and green hills... quite eerie but very beautiful... good work!!

I think 2 elements here work for the composition and help it be different (and thus not boring):

1) The people on the foreground
2) The fog on the background

Technically no big problems - perhaps you could consider warming up the shadows just a bit

Bonjour Carol
Amicalement.
Robert
