This is a strange and eerie effect you have developed.
I like it, it's orginal and outside the normal stuff you see here.

I would love to see your original, unedited shot - the composition, light, and expression here are all terrific! But then PP treatment really doesn't sit well with me.
Opinion only - but I may not be alone.

I've seen the workshop (original) photo - and I really like it! I don't think it needs any work done to it but I might try anyway. The light, eye contact, expression and composition are all good.

Sometimes, simpler is better in my opinion!
