Gareth, you definitely succeeded here (regarding your goals for the pic!) great DOF and a really charming, natural looking kid! the background and backlit effect add to the natural look. did you use fill-flash to brighten up her face?

Gret portrait, really for some magazine cover! DOF is excellent chosen and backlit is great. I suppose you had some kind of reflector too, because her face is in good light and it seems to me that I can see the reflector in her eyes, which creates that magical sparkle that a good portrait should have. Great!
Her expression is very nice, seems like you know her well.
"Summer fashion"? Well, I don't know about Denmark, but down here we hardly wear two shirts for the summer! :) Plus, the colors and the mood will fit better into spring fashion! :))
