| I saw this intersting mushroom growing in the garden and noticed that it was not only undamaged but the top was very flat which enabled me to take this with a very shallow DOF while retaining focus across the whole surface of the mushroom. |

Hi Gareth
While I am so clever today... Let me advise.
I went through a lot of photos where I had the shallow depth of field and afterwards I wanted to kick myself. Yes there is lots of merit for knowing the DOF tables by hart for your specific equipment and taking the best shot that you can while in the field.
I found it saves a lot of frustration shooting at much deeper DOF and then blurring the background later using photoshop. The mushroom will most propably be there the next day, but other objects might only be there for that moment, and focus cannot be fixed later.
Still good effort (although I dont think that your mushroom is perfectly in focus. I am sorry if I am treading on your mushroom...)
Nice shot and interesting to look at. Maybe you cropped it a very litle bit too tight around the mushroom, but nevertheless, I like this "graphic-nature-art".
