Actually, I don't believe that this really is my "best film shot", but it must rank amongst the very best of subject matters which I have shot.

This picture I took with my trusty old Edixa Prismat 35mm SLR (which I still have) when I was on a university expedition to East Greenland in 1970. It was taken from the 16-foot clinker-built wooden boat in which two of us were travelling, powered by a puny 4 h.p. outboard engine.

This is in Scoreby Sund, a huge fjord in East Greenland, and near to Syd Kap. Actually, the [map] shows up quite well on GoogleEarth.

These two huge icebergs could prove dangerous to travellers in a small boat: unlike icebergs in the open sea, these do not carry most of their weight and volume below water as here they are grounded on the floor of the fjord. As such, they are essentially "top-heavy" and, as they begin to melt in the summer sun, they can suddenly roll, disintegrate or totally collapse with disastrous result to boats in the vicinity. Perhaps, therefore, we were just a little foolish to sail our little boat through the opening in this one which we found!

Taken on Kodachrome 64ASA colour reversal film. These slides have gathered 39 years' worth of dust in the loft and so, after scanning this slide, I had to spend some time in Photoshop with the clone tool removing as much of the debris as I could.

Hi John,

This would be a lovely shot if it wasn't for the two big bits of ice just sitting there lol. Great pov the ice looks a little blue but I suppose that could be reflections from the water, the detail;s are good well done.

Regards
Jon

This has come out well John - the scanner certainly picks up lots of the dust marks!! I spent ages cleaning up my photo too.
What an interesting scene seeing those 2 icebergs.
Good colours and sharpness as well
Janice

Hello John,

You are bringing back sweet memories to me with this shot. Since I have sailed off the Labrador Coast for 6 years (1981-1986). I did see many of them. Unfortunately , we had strick orders to stay away from them (^_^). As I was the navigating officer, I had to comply.

So I have very limited shots of icebergs.

Cool contrasts here and a fine composition utilising at best the odd shape of the iceberg to fill it up.

Cheers!
Robert

Hello John!
A old picture, but a very beautiful one!!!
Amazing place, Geenland!
Best regards!
Lili

Hi John,

Terrific interesting shot. What a peaceful setting. The colors of the blues throughout are intense and vibrant. You did a great job in post processing the dust! :) Lisa

I love the subject and the lighting and colors are very nice. Beautiful shades of blue. Something I would love to see in person. TFS

Hello John,

I seem to remember you posting scanned shots very early, on the Trek sites.
I think this is a cracker.
The subject, as you say, is very interesting. I like the interplay of light and shade creating very subtle tones of blue.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi John! HA! I was 10 in 1970, don't feel bad! This is awesome! Blue and white are my favorite color combinations! This one is a real eye catcher! Nice tones! Your scanner did a great job with this! Thanks for joining in on the theme!
B-)

Hello John,
An interesting shot. Great details, sharpness and colours. A very good cadrage. Crisp and cold, but still a captivating composition. Well done, congrats!
