Hvedholm Slot (Hvedholm Castle)
This magnificent red castle was mentioned as a royal scat back in 1231. The noble family Hardenberg owned Hvedholm for centuries, and among the renowned owners was Sophie Lykke - one of Denmark's few female vassals, but nevertheless said to be one of the strictest!
In 1588, Erik Bille built a four-winged castle with three towers and surrounded by a moat, which was inherited by the famous Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe's nephew, Jorgen Brahe. He owned 9 estates and was called "the little King of Funen. The castle burnt down in 1681 but was rebuilt and extended. In the 18th century Preben Bille Brahe inherits this vast property, only 16 years old, and this wealthy young man acquires costly collections of coins, books and art pieces on his journeys in Europe. In the late 1800's Hvedbolm is rebuilt and extended to its present style.
Arm & Gorm Lokdam acquired the castle in 1996, and after a restoration it was opened as a hotel with 130 beds and dining capacity for 400 guests - in the Banqueting Hall alone 130 guests. A lift makes Hvedholm accessible for disabled.

Hvedholm Slot is situated in South Funen on the outskirts of Faaborg with a beautiful view over the town, from where you can explore the multitude of islands in the archipelago. The area also bears the name "Denmark's Garden", and is known for its picturesque beauty. Among the attractions are also Egeskov castle (museums and a famous maze) and the Hans Christian Andersen museum in Odense.

Legends:
The shape of a woman in a green dress may be seen at Hvedholm, and this Mreen Lady" is said to have poured wine for the guests at a dinner party. Hvedholm is also mentioned in the memoirs of the famous Danish poet, Hans Christian Andersen. Imagine him sitting in the shade of the old plane trees writing his fairy tales ? anyhow, the idyllic South Funen is, indeed, a fairy tale landscape.

Fact:
I slept there for a couple of nights and I have to admit I didn’t see this Mreen Lady, but perhaps at new year evening / night where we are staying on this magnificent place celebrating the new year on this castle we will meet here – ho knows. (A couple of beers and some bottle of vine and champagne should help).
A stupid and strange low in the year 1918 destroyed one of Denmark’s riches families from one day to another to a complete ruin. The castle was in the same family for more than 500 years, and from one day to another it was over.

Hej Jens,
TFS

Hello Jens !

Absolutely gorgeous composition and light here to reveal the details of the building. Bravo , bravo , bravo!

Grey days are excellent for these shots have you have no problem with shadows, when you shoot these buildings.

Cheers!

Hi Jens
This beautiful photo could be a excellent poster for the promotion of this nice place. Very well composed, specially with the branches in top of the image and the red facades against the gray sky. The reflections adds a nostalgic mood. Very well done! bravo and thanks for the informative note! Annie

That must have been heartbreaking after so many centuries being in one family - seems like a friendly ghost pooring wine - too bad you missed out on her.
Jens, we have seen many stately homes and beautiful castles during our month long stay in Denmark - a lovely picture and story to share (only place we did not have time for was Odense (did we miss a lot - otehrwise we have to go back some day...)

Hej Jens,
Very nice capture. In most of the cases branches used to "destroy" the image - but not in this case, You used them quite well. Perfect compo with great colors. Bravo.
