CPH Photo Marathon 2008 - Opinion
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This is one of the photos I took during the Copenhagen Photo Marathon 2008.
The English translation of the assignment for this photo was 'Statement'. However, the Danish assignment being 'Synspunkt' I think that 'Opinion' is the correct translation.
The photo did not make it into my final selection of entries. I now think it should have because I don't think the one I chose instead is as good as this one, at least not in terms of interpretation of the assignment.
This was shot at approx. 5:45pm on Saturday or just about 7 hours into the competition. It was shot just outside the Freetown of Copenhagen called Christiania. Christiania is one of my favorite places in Copenhagen. It used to be an old hippie community but now it’s a place filled with cultural activities and lots of room for the odd individual.
I hope, because the photo was intended to, that you understand my interpretation of the assignment. In all its simplicity I tried to support the opinion that graffiti can be art. Graffiti is allowed on the walls around Christiania and you’ll often find artist doing their artwork on all times of the day as long as it’s not raining. I met this guy and asked him if I could take a photo while he was painting and he kindly allowed me to when I told him what the purpose was.
The photo was a bit tricky as the sun was coming from behind the wall and his artwork was in shadow but he himself in the sun. I used two flashes for this one. One from behind him to separate him a bit from the background and to put some light on his artwork and one in my left hand with my arm stretched as far to the left as possible and directed towards his face to put light on him and on the wall. The cool, I think it is, shadows on his legs and body were a gift from the sun and a tree.
As with the other photos for the competition no pp work was allowed so this is straight from my G9 with only a resize before upload.
The result of the competition should be announced on Friday or Saturday. I’m happy with my own effort and that’s the important part.
Cheers,
Jens |

Hei Jens, the second flash destroys it in my opinion for its unnatural and sharp shadow on the wall. Doing it from the right would have been the better way here. On reduced power, the shadow of his face would disappear and even the ones caused by his arm and shoulder wouldn't be too strong. Several shots necessary of course, you weren't in a hurry...
But it was a good idea not to put this one to the competition. The ivy growing on his head, the top of the wall hitting his forehead, the bicycle in the BG, the overall scenery.
Think about taking a shot of his hand in action only, while doing his work. Packed visual content, slow shutter, flash set to rear curtain (I have to admit I don't know whether the G9 offers this feature) to show the motion. Or wide angle lens from behind him, head to the leftt over to his arm with the aerosol can, either crisp sharp from start to end or shallow DOF... Just ideas on the theme. Synspunkt... angle, point of view, viewpoint, aspect, consideration... difficult to decide and to transform into an image.
Cheers, H.:)
