you asked for it...:D
its a brilliant shot of a person you know well..they have 'surrendered' to your and the lens and the real person is coming through beautifully...i though you may have done some colour rebalancing with the eyes..??
my workshop is my own interpretation and by no means a good one for any except me...btw..the material you have here in this form is open to many levels of workshop interpretation so you may get a few..not for correcting but for pure joy of making the shot...'better'
pps..i dont see the workshop flag open..perhaps you just meant written critique
for that i apologise.

Hi, Dennis,
Good portrait, good tilt/angle. The lights are nice, the hair and skin detail also. Since you have asked for critique/advice etc., here it is:
I think that the dynamic contrast between the almost overexposed face and the almost underexposed one is nice and dramatic, BUT the expression of the face is nothing to match this. I mean, I don't know him, but he looks like trying to look cool for the portrait, but he does't look like he has a genuine though or feeling on his mind right now. He's kind of expressionless, and that's what is a mismatch with the dynamic light contrast.
This doesn't make the photo bad at all, it is jut what I would call a slight inbalance between the photographic form and the meaning or content reflected on the face.
Also, this is somewhat beyond your control. The only way to control the model's expression is either by playing a lot with him during shooting (working contact, putting him at ease, instructing him) OR by selecting the most meaningful portrait out of hundreds of shots taken with the same settings.
This being a school study, you may not have had the chance to do all that, so once again, this is not pulling the pic down, it's just the thoughts I have. Not to mention that my screen is not too good when it comes to the three or four darkest hues on the calibration scale. :)
Still deserves the two points, no doubt. I'll take a look at your gallery. :)

Amazing! What a great portrait. Very simple but perfect. The expression on his face is quite different from what I have seen before. Intense!

Everything one would want from a creative portrait - Cool subject, diagonal pose, great lighting (maybe a little over-exposed on the cheek?) but a little too soft-focus for a male subject - the eyes need to be sharp?
Welcome back. 8.5/10
ps: i had a 'fiddle' with this. It depends on what your intent was here. I want to show you another interpretation and, although I have a line-up of WS waiting to be posted, I will push in with this one and attach it later today - about 6 hours hence. IF anyone complains about over-sharpening on it, ignore them!!
AHA! you don't want workshops?

Great portrait. Good light and nice expression. Both of you are very professional, you as a photographer and Jesse as a model (btw. he's very cute).
