Blue hour in Helsinki

Well back in Helsinki again for a short business trip. Today the weather was gorgeous in this nordic area, clear sky with some nice looking clouds which disappeared over the Finnish capital during sunset. Took this picture of the Uspenski Cathedral, during dusk about half an hour after the sun has set, at the so called blue hour.

Noi tripod with me so used a lanternpole and a high ISO (800 ASA) to prevent motion blur.

PP work: Used jpeg, adjusted layers and curves, small horizontal correction, small crop and adjusted saturation and contrast. Used unsharpen mask and resized using unsharpen mask again with a different setting. Add small frame.

Great colors and light!

Very well done for handheld Hansie! Excellent sharpness, nice color. My favorite hour is the blue hour! IF you havea tripod with you next time I would recommend trying F16 or higher, to get the sparkles on the lights! It's so pretty!

Hello Hans!
Wonderful blue hour picture with beautiful lights and reflections!
Perfect sharpness!
Best regards!
Lili

Good job here! Especially with your improvised monopod (lamppost) and steadying technique.

As subjects go - the structure in the background is eyecatching, the low brick building in the foreground less so, although somewhat redeemed by the reflection on the water.

I wonder if a wider shot would've made more of the reflections, and been more forgiving on the slow shutter?

Hi Hans,
Beautiful blue hou and very nice POV on this place!
The darker reflections on the foreground make a nice contrast with the sharpness of the cathedral.
I like the light fan of clouds in the sky.
Very beautiful! Annie

I saw this last night but no time to critique...

Nice blue hour lighting - seem to have got the time just right!! Good job too for no tripod!! Lots of contrast giving strong colour!! Nice one..

Cheers
DAVid

Wonderful shot. The colours are very strong and the detail is great for a hand held shot. You have used the available light well and the reflections are nice.

Hello Hans,
Effective use of the contrasting colours. The colours and composition are all fine here.
Best wishes,
Achim

Hi Hans, I'd give my right arm to get blue skies like you do in many of your compositions! Good light and interesting building with the reflected lights all comes together well. TFS. Murray.

With that lighting, this is a very difficult capture.
I like the mood you have here -- somewhere between warm (the lighting) and cold (the sky and water) -- a study in contrasts.
Incidentally, my Finnish classmate rather likes this - he thinks it's a fine capture. He says the colours are more intense than he remembers them but they create a richly romantic mood
