[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Uspenski Cathedral

LastTuesday I posted a nocturnal picture of the Helsinki's Uspenski Cathedral. Today a late afternoon image. While the sun is disappearing behind the western hills of Helsinki, the last sun rays brighten the red bricks of this impressive building which is situated on the hillside on the Katajanokka peninsula near the harbor of the capital of Finland.

PP work: shot in RAW, adjusted brightness and contrast, move to 16 bit colours and adjusted levels and curves. Used unsharpen mask (200%, 1 pixel) Created a new layer to increase the brightness of the bush in the foreground to create a better balance of contrast and brightness. Converted to jpeg, resized and used again unsharpen mask with a different setting (100%, 0,3 pixel). Add small frame.

Hi Hans

Superb sharpness & nice warm cold colour contrasts between the red facade of the building & the blue sky. Some people critiquing this might find the lower 1/3 a little dark, but I kind of like the gradual gradation in tones from light at the top to dark at the bottom. Tfs!

I like your POV on this Hans, it makes the place look huge! I love the evening light on the building. You did a good job making the gold GLOW! at the top of the cathedral!

Hi Hans,

I like the low POV in this shot as well as the contrasts between light and dark. The fading sunlight highlights the golden domes nicely.

Excellent management with shadows and light!
I like the details on the bush in foreground, the warm colors of the cathedral and the golden glow on the turrets and steeple!

This one works better than the previous cathedral shot for me, Hans. Great POV with the trees and grass at its base and the upper part of the cathedral reaching into the sky.

I also like the fact that you didn't overdo the brightening of the shadows, but left the lower part of the frame reasonably subdued and dark.
