Hello everybody.
This year, it was a long and cold winter. I took this picture in a nature reserve near Strasbourg. It was on a pond covered with over 20cm of ice.
From a technical point of view, I think that I shall have reduce my speed. I had not seen that I was still on portrait mode on my EOS.
Let me ask you a question:
Why the ice plateau around the log is detached from the rest of iced pond?
Modèle de l'appareil photo: Canon EOS 350D DIGITAL
Prise le: 2009:01:13 13:19:26
Temps de pose: 1/639 sec.
Ouverture focale: 4,00 EV (f/4,0)
Vitesse ISO: 100
Avec flash: Flash non déclenché
Distance focale: 10,0 mm
Solution:
Because of the weight of the ice, the surface of the pond sank. Few days before, it was higher. ;) |

hi john,
this pic could have been better were it not for the horizon. it is very distracting.

I agree with the earlier critique - the horizon is so dramatically tilted I can only assumed you did it purposely. It reduces the effectiveness of what might have been an interesting shot.
Hi John
An eyecatching thumbnail, good colours, good sharpness and detail on the near elements (although the upright log could be sharper.)
The tilt isn't an issue to me, it seems here a deliberate angle to emphasise the diagonal lead-in of the ice at bottom-left. A careless or inadvertent tilt would be a different matter.
Cool shot, thanks for sharing

The tilt isn't so much an issue with me as the question that the photo begs "WHY?" Why take it...what is it? Not sure this is interesting. The question would be answered by me as "Don't care".... I do however like the wide angle view.

this detachment of ice is rather interesting
please add the explanation to the mystery if you have it
