Dutch fireworks

Last weekend I went to Reims in France to enjoy the roar of the aircraft jet engines.

A spectacular show on both Saturday and Sunday was performed by many teams and solo aircrafts. Here an impression of the Dutch Solo show of the orange MLU F16 of the Royal Dutch Air Force.

Captain Ralph (Sheik) Aarts doing a great job at the stick. No easy to capture the craft sharply. Here the F16 is releasing the flares which are used to fool heat seeking missiles aimed on the aircraft. A unique and quite spectacular view, particular due the wonderful blue sky and the orange F16 in it. The sun was in my back and is reflecting on the orange belly of the F16. Also the glare of the burning flares are reflected by the aircraft. Remember these flares are released by the aircraft itself and are carried in special containers.

I'm not fully happy with the photo results though. Encountered quite some motion blur, I sure I need more practice with my new Nikon D300 camera, maybe I need a better lens, maybe using a mono- or tripod. Anyway If you have remarks to improve my pictures please let me know. (and no, to start the C*n*n - Nikon discussion is useless)

Hope to show some more of the show, the Red Arrows, Patrouille de France and many more did a great job.

PP work, cropped, resized, sharpened and add frame.

My turn to see the airshows very soon Hans.
RIAT 2009 is on 18/19 July. Who knows, you may be there.

Nice work here. Always good to see the flares fired during the displays.
I know how you'd have to work for this one. He'd have been fairly high before he set off the flares, so to get such a good image at that distance is testament to your camera skills.

I don't think getting a new lens would prove anything.
Look at the challenges before you criticize yourself.

Shooting a very fast moving object, against a bright sky with additional light form the flares, trying to maintain the subject in frame, panning a fairly heavy set of gear etc etc.

All in all, i think you did a pretty good job.

Cheers,

Martin

Nice timing with the flares - I always miss the darn things. This guy is pulling some serious 'g' looking at the mist of the main part of the wings and the angle of the smoke off the wingtips!!

You're right in that there is a little blur - I say monopod for moving objects like this. Gives great support with the long lens..

I'd love to fly one of these babies - but I'm too damn tall :(

Cheers
David

Hello Hans.

Good moment captured and well presented.
Maybe sharpness is not 100% bang on to me still images looks very well.

Hi Hans, I think that is a nice photo of the colorful plane. You have timed it just right with the flares too. The bright orange coloring is a nice contrast with the blue sky.

Well done! Lisa

**wink wink** Become a C*N*N girl! Ok...here is first problem. F stop! F5 is TOO OPEN... I would have put this on F7.1 up to F16 depending upon the time of day, or available light. The F5 is too soft. IT's not motion blur, it's softness!
I would have run this at shutter priority first..and if I was still having problems, I would have switched to Apeture priority.
ALSO...what is the F on your Sigma?? 2.8?? If it's higher than that, get a new lens! Anything above that is useless, for me anyways.
B-)
Does that help? If not, come to Niagara in September, I give you lessons! HAHA!
B-)
XOXOXO
Linda
Still, all in all a great capture considering the speed and motion of this bird.

Hi Hans,
Awesome shot! You caught it at a great moment. I did notice the slight lack of sharpness due to the motion blur but it's nothing too serious. Well cropped.

TFS,
Scott.

Hi Hans,
A great action shot. As you say, may be lacking in sharpness a wee bit, but that does not matter.
Sunil

hello hans, first of all i shoot pentax but we wont go there either! hahaha! (the trick for me was a new lens by the way-that changed everything!) this is still a spectacular image, so much excitement to it, perfect timing, wonderful colors too, i guess a little fuzzy and the light on your back probably wasn't the best pov to get but still i get the point of the shot and i do like it a lot,
thanks scott

Hans
Excellente prise de vue avec une très jolie composition en prime. très beau travail!
Amicalement

Hi Hans,
Excellent action shot and details.
Great capture.Well done my friend.TFS.

Hello Hans

Great job on this image. I think if you turned the contrast and sharpness up a notch, it would bring the outline of the aircraft out nicely and compensate for some of the worrys that you have about the image. The POV is Excellent. I think that you have a wonderful image.

Regards
Jimmy

Belle démonstration de prise de vue instantanée ou le bon reflex prime.
Le moment du déclanchement est parfaitement choisi pour aboutir à cette belle image. Bravo.
