Birth of an idea

Jean Lecanuet - Olivier de Kersauson - Patric Herr

From 1983, the idea to create animations on the quays of Rouen to give to Rouennais the envy to reconquer their harbour, germ in mind of Patric Herr, then deputy mayor in charge of the public relations, the holidays and ceremonies.

The envy to create a big concentration of sailboats makes its road and in 1985, an association " The Sails of Freedom" is created.
Various demonstrations are then organized, whose most famous will stay the "Race of Freedom Rouen - New York", in 1986, race of big multihulls.

THE ARMADA 2008
The Fifth edition which took place from 5 till 14 July, the success was there again.

With the new Bridge 'Gustave Flaubert' in spring 2008, the highest mobile bridge of Europe and the longest of the world, a real Triumphal arch on "THE ARMADA 2008", Rouen was the big star of the media.
Ships, big private and military sailboats as well as "grey boats" were there.

And big novelty 2008, "Sail Training International", international association which organizes worldwide races of big sailboats is partner of "The Armada 2008".

During the magnificent Parade in the Seine of July 14th (today), certain sailboats take off towards Liverpool, where will be given the departure of the race Tall Of Ship Race 2008, July 18th. Sailboats navigate then towards Maloy in Norway before ending the race to Den Helder in Netherlands on August 23rd.

The most beautiful to my taste : the Amerigo VESPUCCI

Type : three-master boat
Length : 101m
Width maxi: 15,5m
Year of launch : 1931
Construction site: Castellammare di Stabia's shipyards (Italy)
Port of registry : La Spezia
Owner : Italian Navy
Country : Italy
Launched in 1931 to Castellamare, this impressive three-master has the name of the Florentine sailor at the origin of the discovery of America. This ship school, real floating museum, often navigates in Méditérranée, for the instruction of the officer cadets of the Italian naval school.

Resized photo for TL - Addition of frame and text - adjustment of the contrasts.

A wink for the magnificent day I spent on the quays of Rouen with these marvellous ships and their nice crews :o)
Have a nice July 14th !!!

Marylou ;)

Hi Maryline
Excellent shot and present
TFs
cheers,Braca

Bonjour Marylou,

Hi Maryline
great work of this beautiful boat
I was lucky to be on this boat about 20 years ago!
wonderful
ciao
Lucio

Amicalement
Antoine

Hi Maryline,

Nicely composed, but I think it's a bit dark . . so loosing the detail of the ship . .
I like visiting this kind of boat . . Last time was Guthenberg ship which stop by at Jakarta . .
I believe it's very hot and bright when you capture this shot . .

Tfs,
TJutjut

Bella Marylou, mi fa molto piacere vedere l'orgoglio della nostra marina una delle più belle navi a vela mai costruite, otima foto splendidamente presentata, bravissima, ciao Silvio

Bonjour Marylou,

Odile

Bonjour Lowietje,
You made a wonderful impression of this beautiful ship which I have pictured several times too :-) I like the clear picture you made, a good overall impression of the whole ship with a superb cloudscape as background.
