After XIIe century, that of the birth then first improvements of the Gothic, France returns in a new century: that of the cathedrals. If it's true that the sometimes keen race with construction was spread as of the end of last century, it is it still more at the first years of XIIIe century. All are in search of a spirituality quasi absolute which one wants to see materializing in the cathedrals. This majesty, these dimensions which one wants to always increase give to France its more beautiful cathedrals in less than one century. The century lends itself besides very well to this "competition" between cities, enters évêchés, so much it's the golden age of the Middle Ages. Peace perdure, harvests is good, the capacity ensures the order: the money east are enough to fulfill the requirements of such a construction.

The cathedral Notre-Dame de Paris :

This XIIIe century begins with the continuation from work from cathedral Notre-Dame from Paris. Started in 1163, that is to say hardly twenty years after Saint-Denis, under the initiative of its bishop Maurice de Sully, it will be completed in its large?uvre only in 1245. Then, a century of modifications then an intervention at the XIXe century will give him its aspect of today. All the parts are thus not same period: the choir is older than the frontage, going back it to approximately 1210. With sit astride between the period of birth of the Gothic and that of its assertion, the cathedral Notre-Dame door in it this architectural transition. Thus inside, of large pillars which support the repercussion of the vaults recall a Romanesque art dying. The frontage, it, separately the rose window, is dominated by a vertical succession of gothic arches, which slices clearly with the frontage of Laon hardly built a few years earlier. As for dimensions of cathedral Notre-Dame of Paris, they largely exceed those of another cathedral of the primitive Gothic: Noyon : 130 meters of length, 35 meters height under the vault. Such dimensions announce those larger still cathedrals to come.

Bonsoir Corinne!

Robert

beautiful cathedral great details

Bonjour Corinne,
Hope your allright. What a great picture with lots of details nice and sharp. The sky is not to great but you cannot have everything. Well done.

Hi Corinne,
So you are in the cathedral mood as well :-) Like this composition from the rear of the Paris Notre-Dame. A pity the sky is so dull but the presentation in the black frame is superb! Interesting note too. Mercy beaucoup mon amie.

Hello Coco :o)

a bientot et bonne journée Corinne

Bonjour Corinne,
