Outside the medieval gothic building of the Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes) in Avignon, this artist was making a living by having his/her photograph taken with tourists.
It is interesting to watch people's behaviour when they see this kind of artists in popular tourist places. At first they are apprehensive, then their next reaction is to smile or even to laugh. Then they think that having their photo taken together with the artist would be a good idea. Then they just walk away, pleased, having thrown a coin or two in the little hat next to the artist. The artist stays there, for hours on end, motionless...
I usually wonder what these artists think about, standing there all these hours, rain or shine, with their faces and skin covered, imitating something often abstract...
What do they think about, I can't help but still wonder... |
