[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note [French]
Here some bits of lily of the valley gathered in my garden (what explains the spots on the sheets, today rain from where these marks) and some poppies coming from the garden also thus of the fresh whole, to send happiness to you to you all, TL members since here in France, it is the symbol, the day of May 1, also day of our national "Labour day".

A little history now:

The first of May 1 :
Today day of rest, May 1 initially was a day of social fights, born in the streets from Chicago before beating the Parisian paving stones.
History of the first of May 1: a wind of strike come Chicago the United States, years 1880, anger thunders in a working world subjected to rates of work harassing, 12h, sometimes 14h per day. May 1, 1886, beginning of the countable year of the companies, a great demonstration is organized by the trade unions of Chicago. The strike extends soon to the entire country and the mobilization is such as the movement obtains satisfaction: the working day is reduced to 8h, but not without loss. Several workmen of the McCormick factory in Chicago find death in confrontations with the police force. On one of the tombs these some words are engraved: "the day will come where our silence will be more powerful than the voices than you strangle today".

On the other side of the Atlantic, socialist IIème Internationale meets in Paris, in 1889 for the centenary of the French revolution and decides to organize every year, in all the countries and at fixed date, a great working demonstration. Here also, the day of 8h (but always 5 days per week) is the principal claim. And it is the date of May 1 which is appointed, to remember the demonstrations of Chicago it. In the years which follow, May 1 is essential little by little like an appointment and a working day of strikes, but it is in 1936 that the greatest demonstrations take place.

Day of fights become day of rest:

These manifestations of May 1 1936 mark imaginary French durably. They contribute indeed to the election of the first republican coalition of left center, two days later: the Popular Front. Chaired by the Socialist Leon Blum, this government is not long in adopting historical measures for the workers, the week of 40h, the first two weeks of paid-leaves or the recognition of the trade-union right. In 1941, the mode of Vichy transforms this go working in public holiday, "social Harmony and Labour Day". April 29, 1947, the authorities resulting from the Release take again measurement. May 1 is officially declared day be unemployed-paid in all the French companies, and will remain it.

The lily of the valley: a Japanese amulet

Plant underwoods, of the family of liliaceous and originating in Japan, the lily of the valley was always a flower amulet, associated the return of spring. Charles IX would have already had habit to offer some to the injuries of his Court. In Paris, to the beginning of the century, the dressmakers offer of them three bits to the workers and "small hands" (dressmakers). But it should be waited until 1976 so that it is associated the festival of May 1. On the buttonhole of the demonstrators, it then replaces the wild rose and the red triangle which symbolized the division of the day in three equal parts: work, sleep, leisures.

May 1 in the world :

May 1 is celebrated in Belgium, in Luxembourg, in Germany, in Spain, in Central Europe, South Africa, Latin America, in Russia, in Japan. In the United Kingdom, it is first Monday of May which is celebrated. Oddly, in the United States, "Labor Day" is celebrated first Monday of September, and not in May, memory of another episode of working repression.
