A beautiful day of autumn in Charentes-Poitou, this Sunday. A sky of an intense blue which emphasizes the varied colors of the sheets which took these marvellous colours finally. I didn't understand why I saw all your photographs with these autumnal ornaments and here not, anything or almost. And there of a blow in one week it is the festival!

Then as I'm curious, I sought to know why? And here that I found, I share my information with you, we will play "the small chemist", nothing to fear, they isn't complicated, not, assuredly since I understood ;ODD

Why the sheets have colors varied in autumn?

Contrary to the general belief, the phenomenon of the autumnal colouring of the sheets is not caused by the frost. It would be rather ascribable to the reduction length of the days (photoperiod). The cold nights and the short days stimulate the production of ethylene, a hormone responsible for the fall of the sheets. One period of dryness at the end of the summer can also hasten colouring.

With the autumn, a cork plug blocks little by little the channels transporting food towards the sheet. This one survives some time by digesting its own reserves. When the essential minerals are not available any more to regenerate chlorophyl (green pigments), it disappears leaving its place with yellow pigments (carotenes and xanthophylls) normally masked by the green.

In the case of maple for our friends of the North-American continent and especially of Canada with their fabulous maple syrup, the cork plug doesn't prevent the crude sap completely from penetrating in the sheets. It results from it an accumulation forced from sugar in their fabrics causing the formation of coloured chemical compounds: phenols and anthocyanes. The latter, a very marked red, will change color according to the acidity of the medium: sharp red in acid and purple ground in alkaline ground. The formation of this pigment is supported by the followed fresh nights of sunny days. The percentage of chlorophyl (green) decreases little by little, revealing carotenes (yellow). This is why one can see sheets of maples tinting green simultaneously, of yellow and red.

One can observe this fantastic pallet of colors until late in October. But the sheets are in general put to fall, according to areas', as of the end September. This period of fall of the sheets is spread out over at least a month, sometimes more. This exceptional phenomenon occurs only in the countries of the world which are in North, where the winter doesn't allow the survival of certain plants under conditions really very cold. Only conifers preserve their ornaments, their needles being naturally protected from the climate by a layer of wax which insulates them. They also contain suitable substances which preserve them and nourish them throughout the winter season.

A downpour, a strong gale or even little breeze at the end of the autumn and the spectacle are finished! Then let us benefit from these delicious moments to walk, warmly equipped if it's needed but that also helps us to spend the long moments of winter, locked up by the cold.

Note très intéressante.

Bravo! Annie
