And once more ..now loud and clear:
Les Beaux de Provence.

After showing you what a fantastic icecreams you can have in Les Beaux, now a view of this lovely VERY old place itself.

Little history:
Les Baux de Provence is a small village and commune in the Bouches-du-Rhône département in southern France, in the former province of Provence.
It has a spectacular position in the Alpilles mountains, set atop a rocky outcrop crowned with a ruined castle overlooking the plains to the south. Its names refers to its site - in Provençal, a baou is a rocky spur.

The defensive possibilities of Les Baux led to the site being settled very early on. Traces of habitation have been found dating back as far as 6000 BC, and it was used by the Celts as a hill fort or oppidum around the 2nd century BC. During the Middle Ages it became the seat of a powerful feudal lordship, which controlled 79 towns and villages in the vicinity.

The town was granted in 1642 to the Grimaldi family, rulers of Monaco, as a marquisiate.
The title of Marquis des Baux remains with the Grimaldis to this day, although administratively the town is entirely French. The title is traditionally given to the heir to the throne of Monaco. The present Marquise des Baux is Princess Caroline of Monaco, heir to her brother, Albert II of Monaco.

Les Baux today;

Les Baux is now, discoverd by the tourists; deserved reputation as one of the prettiest villages in France. Its present population of around 500, and many of its buildings (including the castle) are picturesque ruins.

Put this in your Agenda ! You love it !!
My Sister and family live 7 mins away and my niece works there in the Office du Tourisme.

groet
Huub

Hi John, it seems to be a great place to be :)) white clouds in the sky made it a bit difficult to handle a guess but you have done a good job..

Hello John,
Thank you for posting this classic view of a marvelous town. My son and I will be doing a bike tour of Provence which will take us there in June! I will have to find the West entrance just to say I've been in the less known way.

Regards,
lois

This is an old castle? Is it the one that Lancelot came from, do you think? :) He was French, if I recall correctly.

Anyway, it's nice to have an "insider's" view of this. Well done!
Gayle :)

Wonderful composition and POV, John !
Lovely photo of a beautiful place.

tfs and have a great day,

What a nice place with a stunning view. You filled the frame well (not refering to the border) with nice saturated colours and an image full of contrasts. Lovely work. A polarised filter might have added a bonus or two for you.

Guess I hit the motherlode: haven't been to this page in your gallery yet! Excellent view! So many beautiful and romantic places in this world. Can't expect to visit them all, but this site brings them closer, for sure....
Cheers
Otto
