In the morning fog in background, the castle of Aliénor of Aquitaine, witness of the glorious past of Niort.
*************************************************
Monument emblematic of the city and last vestige of a vast castle, the Keep of Niort is the second more important keep of France after that of Vincennes.
Without question one of the most beautiful sets of Romance twin keeps of France.
It was the heart of a vast castle which Henri II Plantagenêt made build about 1160 to protect the fields that Aliénor of Aquitaine had brought to him in its dowry. The two keeps, distant of 16 meters, were connected only by one wall.
It is in XVe century that the current body of the central building was built. The northern keep, which collapsed partially in 1749, was rebuilt the following year. The building was used as secondary prison with the prison of the La Rochelle at the XVIIIe century. While seeking well, you will find some graffiti engraved by English prisoners.
This jewel of the end of XIIème century accomodates in its centre a museum made up of ethnological collections (caps, jewels, costumes, movable poitevin) and archaeological (of the Age of Bronze to the Early middle ages).
On one of its two notched towers, a table of orientation makes it possible to appreciate the old city. |

Hello dear Corinne,
I love the composition here, the faded lovely background, and the sharp and clear footbridge.
Many thanks for your comments on "White Poinsettia."
All the best,
Karen
