[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Normally an image like this can only made by a diver. But not in this case. Displayed here is ‘la vanne’, the massive valved tube, meant to lead the water through the bottom of the Malpasset barrage. The barrage collapsed in December, 1959 due to construction mistakes and flooded the region of Frejus (Southern France) and the town itself, wreaking major havoc.

After a cycling tour from Vaison la Romaine to St Raphael we had time to spare before boarding the car/cycle train back to Holland. We had once read about the barrage incident and decided to visit the site. And it was quite a thing to behold. The giant concrete debris from the barrage which collapsed almost completely, were still strewn along the river bed. This a bit sinister looking ‘vanne’ seemed to epitomize the disaster strikingly.

Scanned with a Epson 2450 photo scanner, desaturated, adjusted levels, curves & contrast, USM-ed, added a frame, saved for the web.

Kom jij doen ? ? ?
Hey man, welcome here on TL, we can use another great photographer ! !
What a story, sinister indeed.....
And the picture ? Combining with the note, a good shot !

Hi Bert,
Welkom bij TL. Er is zoveel meer gelegenheid tot experimenteren hier bij TL. Heerlijk, zouden ze bij de reclame zeggen.
groetjes Rob

You sure make 'an entrance' here Bert. Wow. what a picture, great graphical shot, and a great informative note ! Love your choice of B&W for this one.

Bad souvenir. Good photo reportage. In 1959 march I have been admitted in the French Navy, I was at Toulon, which is not far from Fréjus/St Raphaël. I know well this place (Malpasset) Thanks for posting.

very graphic great entrance.....
We take this like a promise of other beautifull shots...
I like the framing.. and the mouvement of the center in each frame.......

Hoi Bert,

Hello again Bert

I keep repeating myself on TL, but the simple images are always the best. No fuss.
The light at the end of the tunnel, it's striking, almost like an eye ...
Thanks for sharing

Hi Bert
Good to see you at TL which sure is something little different from TE.
Good depth and perspective of this thing (which I have problem to understand what it is...)
Anyway effectful presentation in BW.

A nice framing here the way you positioned this shot makes it look like two frames around the round tunnel. the light shining in is nice also. good shot

Wow this is extraordinary Bert! such graphic intensity and visual impact turning an ordinary scene into something very special.. i love the richness of the textures and the deep monochrome tones you've achieved and the whole effect is so powerful.. terrific work! so glad that you've joined us on TL :) - Ayda

joining TL in great style, Bert! please be welcome!
great framing, looks like a dry vein.
b&w is the wiser choice for this image!
what a story, Bert, sinister, dreadful.

Great image.Love the B&W treatnment. The image stands for itself but the story gives it an extra dimension.
