Empty, abandoned, alone, not even able to stand up quite straight, and yet with a light of its own... ... ...

Mulhouse, like most of Alsace, has had a stormy political history, which has resulted in a unique culture: a blend of French and German language and customs that nonetheless becomes wholly something of its own.

Mulhouse was part of the southern Alsatian county of Sundgau in the Holy Roman Empire. In 1354, her citizens decided to join 9 other cities to form the Décapole, an association of ten Free Imperial Cities in Alsace. In 1515, the city joined the Swiss Confederation as an associate and was therefore not annexed by France in the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 like the rest of the Sundgau. However, it voted to join France 150 years later, on January 4, 1798, during the French Directory period.

After the Franco-Prussian War and the unification of Germany, Mulhouse was annexed to the German Empire as part of the territory of Alsace-Lorraine (1870-1918). The city was occupied by French troops on 8 August 1914 at the start of World War I, but they were forced to withdraw two days later in the Battle of Mulhouse. Alsace-Lorraine was returned to France in 1918. It was occupied and annexed by Nazi Germany after the Battle of France in 1940, until restored to France at the close of the war in 1945.

This area, the lower town of Mulhouse, was originally occupied by merchants and craftsmen. Much of it has been revived, gentrified and recommercialized in recent years, but there are still a few abandoned buildings that await a loving touch (and more than a little cash, as Janice points out below).

Please forgive my inability to critique as fully as I did earlier. I am hopeful that I will be back in full swing by the beginning of August. In the mean time, I would like to continue sharing my photos with you. These images were processed before my hands got bad.

I love the light here Silke, makes the colors nice and soft.
These old buildings tell a story by it's self... usually a long history.

Oh Silke - I am sorry - you poor thing!
Sad to see abandoned homes - but sometimes the cost of repair is much more than the owners can afford.
You say that there "a few abandoned buildings that await a loving touch" AND i'll add - the $$$$$$'s...

great details of this abandoned house. I like the texture of the wall with the window, their cracks marking his color, the details for the half, a good angle of this corner.

The way it is used attract the eyes! All the white tones have a little dirt tone.... The mood of abandon is of some chic remain :)

There is a certain charm to old buildings, even ruins! Similarly, I took a pic at the carshow of a work in progress: old paint peeling, fading layers, chips and nicks. Just like in your building. One imagines ghosts of the past that would be driven out by restoration.....

Silke, this a difficult one for me.
I love the composition of the old worn-out house and that lamp.
But then it begins : behind the house there's a gray spot ( building ), blue rainpipe, pigion and a very small view on another building.
For me it " shakes the compo "
BUT what is the solution ?
Fill it all with gray, cut the old house,
put something else in the background ?
Honestly, I can't put it out of my sleeve.

Like to know your opinion !
