Walking around the courtyard of the Louvre palace, my eyes were drawn to Mr. Pei's "controversial" pyramid time and again. I simply love this modern glass and steel structure, and the little pyramids that surround it.

So naturally it became my main subject for some nightshots. For this one I used the leg-zoom ;o).

What you see here is (front to back): a small pyramid, the large pyramid, and through it the Arc de Triomphe du Caroussel.

Tech talk

Again, in-camera compo.

Downsized for TL and framed with some home-made PS actions.

No other corrections were made on the picture. But beforehand, yes; I find that the camera seldom proposes the correct exposure. Indeed, usually reducing the speed by half works better. So: manual settings only!

On the first pic in this series, Els asked me why I used these particular settings.

ISO 200: offers a good trade-off between exposure time and image noise. A higher value needs a shorter exposure but will usually render more noise, as the sensor uses a higher sensitivity.

F/13: suffices for creating a large enough DoF; at f/22 you'd need a longer exposure, and that means a higher risk for noise. F/8 would probably have sufficed too DoF-wise, in this particular shot.

8": I looked at what my camera proposed, and then used half the speed. I admit that I didn't use the histogram to check my exposure, I simply looked at the image on that tiny lcd and thought it looked good... you don't always need that hi-tech stuff ;o) Though it can be quite useful, of course...

The composition here is slightly out on the horizontal plane which for me shows an imbalance on the image.Although slight its enough to distract from an otherwise good capture.

Really great capture-I was unable to get there at night, so I am quite envious--you have caught this well, exposure and dof really great---well done---Lynne

Good lightning, good POV of the building.
I personnally prefer night urban scenes slightly underexposed, like in this case. Thanks for the nice technical note.

Reminds me my wife is waiting for me in the living room to start watching The Da Vinci Code movie. Sorry, got to go:-)

Regards
Michel

Hi Frank..nicely composed shot...sharp with great light.

Roger

Good night capture! Sharp with great colours and light

Seems to be a little bit tilted towards the right which is probably more obvious because of the symmetry in the photo.

Cheers,
Jens

All of these Paris shots are breathtaking as Paris is my favorite city! I love the repetition of the triangle/diamond pattern throughout your photo. It's just an awesome shot! Perfect lighting!

Your notes are very useful and appreciated.

Hello Frank

Beautiful visual!
This light pyramid is wonderful, an effect in 3D,
I am not so demanding in the presented works, but I don't see a lot of difference in the picture as they said. If he has it doesn't distract me in anything.
I find a beautiful work, clean and of a wonderful one visual!
Congratulations

Hello Frank, it's a classic of course but you did it very well, the composition is fine but what I like the most is the exposure, the light is perfect, not too much just enough, really well done, thanks!

So, you've been to Paris - I love that city - I think it is the most beautiful city I've seen.
Good shot of the louvre at night Frank with is all lit up. I only saw it in the daytime. Awesome building this "controversial" pyramid is. And I like how you show us it at this angle

Hi FRank,

You did a great job with this night shot, very good exposure, sharpness and nicely composed. Sometimes its better to use your intuition and not all the high tech gadgets.

Hardstikke mooi; ik was er bij daglicht in lage zon, maar dit is wel erg mooi zo. Sprankelend, scherp, puntig; dit moet wel heilzame werking hebben ;)
Ik hoop dat het goed met je gaat Frank!

Thanks for the great comments on my Louvre pic. I find all of your Louvres a joy to take in. My eyes light up with your captive pics. I just returned from France Sept 14 to 21st and enjoyed it and will go back. When my dollar gets stronger. Peace
