The 1st April is traditionally synonymic of practical joke. But where from comes this tradition?
In 16th century, Charles IX in made the decision which the new year would begin henceforth on January 1st and on April 1st... Presents offered for new year persisted and some persons continued to offer presents by April 1st. In time these presents were transformed into jokes. But why a fish? Presents offered to the time were often food. The date of the fast coinciding with April the choice of the fish was frequent. |
