A very lovely capture especially without lens flare. Did you use a lens hood?
Great eye and patience waiting to get get those gulls in position to block out part of the hard sun rays.

I watched the sun going down with those same colors and decided against it, as I was sure I would mess it up.

Excellent mood in here, Marco. The gulls are magnificent birds imo; very gracious in their flight, they are as agile as fighter planes. But hey, don't you know looking into the sun can be quite dangerous, especially when zoomed in? ;o))
At first I didn't like the gull that was blown out because of the sun behind it. But after a couple more looks, it seems to fit...

various flying styles are interesting in the light and shadow situation, as an photo image.
seagulls are two types, one is away from human, and the other is near the human. perhaps their foods separate their living style and fate. this is like crows. white seagulls and black crows is competing near the human...

Perhaps the OE part is a little too glaring or strong, although it could be intentional in your shot. Always a matter of personal preference here. The rest of the photo is great, especially the spread out wings in flight.
