Mont Cenis (Italian: Moncenisio) is a massif and pass (el. 2081 m / 6827 ft) in Savoy in France which forms the limit between the Cottian and Graian Alps.
A road was built across it between 1803 and 1810 by Napoleon, while a light railway (named after its inventor, Mr. Fell, and worked by English engine-drivers) was opened alongside the road in 1868, but was destroyed in 1871, on the opening of the Mont Cenis Tunnel.
This tunnel (highest point 1295 m / 4249 ft) is really 27.4 km 17 miles west of the pass, below the Col de Fréjus. From Chambéry the line runs up the Isère valley, but soon bears through that of the Arc or the Maurienne past St Jean de Maurienne to Modane (98.2km / 61 mi from Chambéry). The tunnel is 13 km in length, and leads to Bardonecchia, some way below which, at Oulx the line joins the road from the Col de Montgenèvre.
Thence the valley of the Dora Riparia is followed to Turin (103.8 km / 64.5 mi from Modane). The carriage road mounts the Arc valley for 25.7 km / 16 mi from Modane to Lanslebourg, whence it is 12.9 km / 8 mi to the hospice, a little way beyond the summit of the pass. The descent lies through the Cenis valley to Susa (49.9 km / 37 mi from Modane) where the road joins the railway.
To the south-west of the Mont Cenis is the Little Mont Cenis (2184.2 m / 7166 ft) which leads from the summit plateau (in Italy) of the main pass to the Etache valley on the French slope and so to Bramans in the Arc valley. This pass was crossed in 1689 by the Vaudois, and by some authors is believed to have been Hannibal's Pass.
Being a pass in the Alps, the Mont Cenis was used several times in history. One example is the descent of Constantine I to Italy, to fight against Maxentius.


Il Colle del Moncenisio, (in francese Col du Mont Cenis) , è un passo delle Alpi che unisce la Val di Susa, in provincia di Torino, con la regione della Maurienne, compresa nel dipartimento francese della Savoia.
Il colle è situato totalmente in territorio francese a seguito delle rettifiche al confine ottenute dalla Francia a titolo punitivo dopo la II guerra mondiale.
Il colle separa le Alpi Cozie dalle Alpi Graie. La prima vetta delle Alpi Graie che si incontra a nord-est del colle è la Punta di Ronce; la prima vetta delle alpi Cozie che si incontra a sud-est del colle è la Cima di Bard.
Appena sotto il colle, nel versante che scende verso l'Italia ma ancora in territorio francese, è stata costruita una grande diga per la produzione di energia elettrica, divisa tra Italia e Francia. La diga forma il Lago del Moncenisio.
Si calcola che l'enorme portata d'acqua della diga sommergerebbe l'intera bassa Val di Susa se dovesse ripetersi una catastrofe come quella del Vajont.
Il colle ha avuto una grande importanza storica. Quando Annibale attraversò dalla Francia verso l'Italia utilizzò il Colle del Piccolo Moncenisio, situato ad ovest dell'attuale Colle del (Grande) Moncenisio.
Napoleone vi fece costruire tra il 1803 ed il 1810 la strada di collegamento e l'Ospizio.
Nel 1868 venne costruita lungo la strada del colle una ferrovia a cremagliera dall'ingegnere John Barraclough Fell. La ferrovia venne smantellata alcuni anni dopo (1871) in occasione dell'apertura del Traforo ferroviario del Frejus.
Il Colle del Moncenisio nei secoli ha avuto una grande importanza militare. Con la cessione della Savoia alla Francia (1860) è diventato il valico di confine tra Francia e Italia. Ha quindi visto la realizzazione di grandi sistemi fortificati che dovevano difendere l'accesso al passo da un'eventuale azione nemica ricolta verso la Valle di Susa.
Nel 1874-80 il Regio Esercito italiano creò la Piazza militare del Moncenisio, costituita dai forti in pietra Cassa, Varisello e Roncia. A questi aggiunsero altre importanti batterie e fortificazioni, come la Batteria Pattacroce e le opere fortificate erette sulla cima del monte Malamot. I Francesi a loro volta costruirono su un'altura presso il vecchio confine il Fort de la Turra. Nei primi anni del XX secolo il colle vide la costruzione delle due batterie corazzate La Court e Paradiso. Negli anni Trenta, sotto il regime fascista, furono realizzate le opere in caverna del Vallo Alpino. Tutte queste fortificazioni sono passate in territorio francese dopo le rettifiche di confine avvenute nel 1947. Rimangono numerosi resti delle opere militari, visitate ogni anno da centinaia di persone.
Il colle è anche un luogo interessante dal punto di vista turistico nella bella stagione grazie alla possibilità di effettuare escursioni.
La strada che attraversa il colle si tiene un po' più in alto del colle stesso e raggiunge così l'altezza di 2.100 metri.

Excellent landscape photography Silvio, a little words my friend base on what I heard from the experts :-), a little crop on the excess sky is advisable, to focus our eyes from the ground to the farthest mountain. Outstanding work.

Hi Silvio,
it has been a while since we ran into eachother. But I am glad I did. This is a great photo of a beautiful area. I love the red colored plants in the FG and how the contrast with the stark blue lake. The vertical format allowed the eye to get an airy feeling which created a pleasant look through the photo. It does appear the some clouds are a bit OE.

ciao silvio....anche tu qui?grande...hai visto quanto e` bello il lago?peccato che e` artificiale,quando ci sono stato io venivo dalla francia e quando sono arrivato alla diga arrivavano certe raffiche di vento gelato da brividi...vabbe` che stamo a 2100 d altezza ma ad agosto non puo fare dieci gradi con il sole..bel lavoro..grande composizione..molto delicata...complimenti
