Picturesque scenery in front of the Bavarian Alps lies the Chimsee. With almost 80 square kilometers, it is Germany's third largest lake.

The Chiemsee, also called "Bavarian Sea", is the largest lake in Bavaria and Lake Constance and in the Müritz the third largest lake in Germany (Lake Starnberg) has, however, a greater volume of water.

The Chiemsee has a volume of 2,047,840,000 m³ at a level of 63.96 kilometers (of shoreline with islands 83 km). The catchment area is 1398.56 kilometers ², of which 605 km ² in Bavaria. The islands in the lake are Mr island (238 ha) island of women (15.5 ha) and Cabbage Island (3.5 ha), which together comprise the community of Lake Chiemsee, as well as the unincorporated community Schalch island (22 meters). The area around Lake Chiemsee, Chiemgau, is one of the most popular recreation areas. The beauty of the Lake Chiemsee is created) by the close proximity of the Chiemgau Mountains (Hochfelln, Hochgern, Hochplatte and Kampenwand. The lake is under the protection of the international Ramsar Convention.

The lake is known mainly through two of its three major islands: On the island of women, there is a nunnery. Better known is the Lord Island, located on the two locks: a landscaped park with the old castle (a former monastery) and the New Herrenchiemsee the "fairy tale king" Ludwig II, which is modeled on the palace of Versailles. The third island - the island of cabbage - is uninhabited. There are also three very small islands: The Schalch west of the island, and two unnamed woman, tree-covered islets 54 or 80 meters south of the island cabbage, area, each with a few square meters.

The lake, as well as the city and the entire Chieming Chiemgau are named after an earl named Chiemo.

The Chiemsee was like many other alpine lakes at the end of the last Ice Age about 10,000 years ago as Ausschürfung a glacier. Originally, the lake covered an area of almost 240 square kilometers, which is approximately three times that of today's water. Within 100 years the water area was reduced by about 200 ha 100 years ago, the water level was lowered by about one meter. This large areas were drained.

North of the lake is possibly (in pre-Christian period around 500 BC) was a comet or meteorite fallen, see Chiemgau Impact.

The largest tributary of the lake is the Tiroler Achen, the only outflow, the Alz. Inflows Tiroler Achen and Prien wash sand and gravel into the lake, so that it gradually silted up.

Great post hee,

Hello, Adrian -
Wonderful image - the details of the rough surface of the water are sharp, as is the foremost sailboat with its tiny figures on board. The horizon is punctuated with ever more distant sails and the misty mountain range far beyond. Well done.

Hi Adrian,

Ciao Adrian, wonderful composition with a lot of boats, splendid view of great lake, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Adrian,
The boat and its passengers is sharp and placed well in the frame. A fine nautical scene highlighted by the choppy waters and the outline of the distant mountains. Well done and regards.
Danilo
