... on an old gum tree ...

No, in this case it sat on a branch of a birch tree in a wildlife sanctuary for birds, called "Vogelpark Walsrode", in northern Germany.

Although the day was very bright the huge cage of this bird was shaded. I don't know whether this birds are shy or not but was happy to find it sitting close to the fence. As I wanted to take a shot of the bird and not of the fence I tried to manage my camera through the fence and shot. That is why the bird is so close.

Unfortunately I had to crop the image to get rid of shadows of the fence that were really distracting. A bit more space around the bird would have been better.

Now I would like to tell you why I was so keen on taking a shot of a kookaburra.
A part of my family lives in Australia. Several years ago my grandfather visited them. He stayed half a year "down under". That was the time when he had a stroke. He recovered and had a daily walk to the letter box at the entrance of the land of our family. It took him half an hour to get there and half an hour to come back! One day he came back home, embarrassed, because he thought he heard some kids laughing at him while he made his way slowly to the letterbox. My family had to hide their grins. They knew that it was a kookaburra, but my grandfather was so upset that he made everybody smile with his story.

So, this is why I would like to dedicate this shot with all its limitations to my grandfather. Hopefully the angels will provide him a fast internet access. :-)

PP: cropped, adjusted contrasts, added frames.

Thanks for having a look. Wish you all a funny and happy week. Kindest regards, Britta

Hello Britta,I love to see these birds.Your shot is a little on the dark side, and it is a pity that we cannot see the birds' eye, but taking into consideration the difficulties of shooting in a wildlife park, it has turned out quite well.
I enjoyed reading your notes, your little story about your grandfather made me smile.
Tfs, regards Jean.

Hallo Britta,
Thomas
