Above the city is the castle Monschau, which dates back to the 13th century — in 1198 the first mention of Monschau was made. Starting in 1433 the castle was used as a seat of the dukes of Jülich. In 1543 Emperor Charles V besieged it as part of the Geldern Feud, captured it and plundered the town. However the castle stayed with Jülich until 1609, then it became part of Palatinate-Neuburg.

In 1795 the French captured the area, and under the name Montjoie made it the capital of a canton of the Roer département. After the area became part of the Kingdom of Prussia in 1815, Monschau became the capital of a district, the Kreis Montjoie.

During World War I some people argued that Monschau, or as these people still called it Montjoie, should be annexed to Belgium since it was a historically Walloon area that had been Germanized by the Prussians.[1]

In 1918 William II, German Emperor, changed the name to Monschau.

In 1972 the town was enlarged with the previous independent municipalities Höfen, Imgenbroich, Kalterherberg, Konzen, Mützenich and Rohren.

Bonjour John,

What a lovely capture showing the German "Fachwerkhaeuser" street of the historical German city of Monschau!

I like the mood in the picture with nice view of the rivulet flowing through the city. The sharpness and POV in the picture, are very nice too. The colors are natural with wonderful use of the daylight.

Thanks for posting.

Schoene Gruesse,

Paras

PS: I am sorry, as I have consumed my daily points for today :( otherwise I'd love to award smiley for this great work.

Hi John,
This is an effective point of view offering a good perspective on this place. But the photo is tilted and has a lack of clarity. I proporse you a WS, don't mind!
Annie

Hi john

Good use of diminishing linear perspective. As the bridge is a key focal point on the vanishing point, I'd level it, in a ccw rotation. I'd also sharpen this image.

dear John,
I'm interested in your expression of this space,
each objects make one perspective, and it looks curved and tilt,
of course as picturesque image, this effect makes dynamism in still picture, maybe it is your originality in this shot.
colors are chic and calm atmosphere is nice,
the one on bridge is eye catching.
thank you,
Akihisa
