Die Kornblume (Centaurea cyanus) gehört zur Gattung der Flockenblumen (Centaurea), die zur Familie der Korbblütler (Asteraceae) gezählt wird, eine sehr vielfältige Pflanzenfamilie, deren Vertreter alle korbförmige Blütenstände besitzen.

Durch ihre auffallend hellblauen (cyanen) Blüten hat die Kornblume ihren Artnamen erhalten. Hippokrates, der berühmte griechische Arzt, benutzte den Namen Centaurea für die Kornblume. Er leitet sich möglicherweise vom Centauren Chiron ab, der eine Wunde am Fuße des Helden Achilles geheilt haben soll. Ceres, die römische Göttin der Ernte, trug die Kornblume im Haar. Obwohl ihr keine direkte Heilung nachgewiesen werden kann, benutzt man sie oft gegen Entzündungen, Hautrötungen und Bindehautreizungen. Selten ist sie auch Bestandteil von Kosmetika. Sie ist nicht giftig.
