Yesterday I had an amazing visitor, Woody - the Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major), he is a member of the woodpecker family, Picidae.

He gave me the chance to make a few shots in this position hanging under a fat-ball, I also have another shot on TrekNature today - so - for the Web-master, this is not the same shot!!!

The Great Spotted Woodpecker is distributed throughout Europe and northern Asia. It is largely resident except in the colder regions of its range.

It is an inhabitant of woodlands and parks, depending for food and nesting sites upon old trees. It is often an inconspicuous bird, in spite of the plumage. The large white shoulder patch is a feature that catches the eye.

Great Spotted Woodpecker is 23-26 cm long, with a 38-44 cm wingspan. The upper parts of the male are glossy black, with a crimson spot on the nape and white on the sides of the face and neck. On the shoulder is a large white patch and the flight feathers are barred with black and white. The three outer tail feathers are barred; these show when the short stiff tail is outspread, acting as a support in climbing. The under parts are buffish white, the abdomen and under tail coverts crimson. The bill is slate black and the legs greenish grey,

Beautiful capture, Sabine, in a wonderful composition. It is very interesting to see him hanging like that but that gives us a very nice view of his underbelly. Great sharpness & colours. Excellent!

Hi Sabine,
it's very beautiful photo. So much details on the feathers and so nice, clean colours. I like his pose - he is so concentrated on waht's he doing! Beautiful photo!

Marek

P.S. I wonder what would my family say if I'd use similar pose during a meal...? ;-D

I don't know how you do this but your bird shots are very impressive. The level of detail here is outstanding, and it is very interesting to see this bird in action. :)

I'm jealous, Sabine!! What a capture... over here we do have some woodpeckers, but I never ever spotted one. We just hear their construction work ;o)). A beautiful bird, beautifully captured.

Hi Wishnu, Great colours and timing for this capture. Good explanation also. Will never tire of these sort of photos. Well done. Murray.

Stunning photo - i've been trying to get one as good as this of the woodpeckers that live near me for years and still not managed it. Colours are crisp and detail is excellent.
Thanks for sharing
Mark

Hi Sabine,
Eva
