Berlin Qaudriga detail

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Another capture of the Brandenburg gate in Berlin.
This time focusing on what is probably the most famous quadriga
carrying Nike the greek goddess of victory. Though originally this was goddess peace (greek godess Irine)
but was changed in 1814 to be goddess Nike when it was returned from paris.
The olive wreath (making her goddess peace) was exchanged for the Iron Cross which is still present today.
I first saw this , when i was 11 and there was still an east/west split.
Ever since I have always wanted to get closer to this monument and walk through it.
Its really nice to see the sculpture returned to its original state as it was pre WWII.
Background info from wikipedia.
The Berlin Quadriga is probably the most famous in the world.
It was designed by Johann Gottfried Schadow in 1793 as the
Quadriga of Victory, as a symbol of peace (represented by the
olive wreath carried by Victory).
Located atop the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany, it was
looted by Napoleon in 1806, and returned to Berlin by Field Marshal
Gebhard von Blücher in 1814. Her olive wreath was subsequently
replaced by an Iron Cross. The statue suffered severe damage during
the Second World War and the association of the Iron Cross with
Prussian militarism convinced the Communist government of East
Germany to remove this aspect of the statue after the war.
The quadriga was not restored to its original state until
German reunification in 1990.

Hi Colin - was in Berlin a couple of days ago. Yes Brandenburg gate with its quadriaga is quite an impressive site. This is a well taken picture - I suppose a night shot, with lovely details. Well done.

Very good framing and very good exposure; it looks great!
Hello Colin,
Nice detailed shot in typical professional Canon nightshot quality. Hard to belief how many desasterous moments this statue has seen already. From mad Prussion armees, to sick Nazis with total destruction to sick Communists with the Wall and the crazy Love Parades on top. ;-) TFS Thomas
Hello Colin:
Simply superb! The velvety night contrasts with the great modeling of the lit statue. Would make a great cover for a travel guide to Berlin!
Cheers
