In Europa sind Dahlien (früher auch Georginen genannt) in zahllosen Zuchtformen beliebt als Zierpflanzen mit großen, dekorativen Blütenständen in vielen Farben und Farbkombinationen. Hier blühen sie vom Sommer bis in den Herbst, sind aber nicht winterhart, so dass die Knollen im Haus überwintert werden müssen.
Dahlien lieben feuchten, lockeren Boden. Werden die Blütenstände nach dem Abblühen entfernt, regt dies die mehrjährigen krautigen Pflanzen zu weiterer intensiver Blütenbildung an.
