My contribution for today is a snapshot, taken on the street in our town, last year. This is a peculiar image during the carnival time in February, when a lot of families and clubs (some of these carnival clubs are having couple of centuries of activity) are going on the streets dressed like this to participate in parades and parties afterwards.

Carnival in Germany (Fastnacht) is much older than Christianity and started as a ritual to drive out the winter blues. People make processions, wearing horrifying face masks and making a lot of noise to drive the ghosts of winter away. The Carnival is celebrated in many cities and towns across Germany but you will surely have a great time if you visiting Aachen, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Mainz or Munich where the manifestations have much bigger amplitude.

In Wikipedia I found something about the etymology of the word “carnival”:

The origin of the name "carnival" is disputed. According to one theory, it comes from the Latin “carrus navalis” ("ship cart"), referring to a cart in a religious parade, such as a cart in a religious procession at the annual festivities in honor of the god Apollo. Other sources, however, suggest that the name comes from the Italian “carne levare” or similar, meaning "to remove meat", since meat is prohibited during Lent. Another theory states that the word comes from the Late Latin expression “carne vale”, which means "farewell to meat", signifying that those were the last days when one could eat meat before the fasting of Lent. Yet another translation depicts carne vale as "a farewell to the flesh", a phrase embraced by certain carnival celebrations that encourage letting go of your former (or everyday) self and embracing the carefree nature of the festival.

P.S. In WS I posted a mask from the carnival.

Hello Sorina,
Well captured moment, I wonder why dad looks so serious.
There must have been a lot of work creating the children's costumes.
A nice piece of photojournalism for the theme, well done.
