Hunderttausend Kristalle, ein zwölf Meter großer Kristalllüster, Kristallwasserspiele und ein eigenes Wassertheater: In der niederbayerischen Donau in Passau wird im Mai ein ganz besonderes Schiff zu Wasser gelassen – das Kristallschiff. Derzeit wird die 26 Jahre alte „MS Donau“ in einer Linzer Werft „geliftet“ und auf Hochglanz gebracht. Die Taufe des Passagierschiffes wird Kristall-Erbin Fiona Swarowski höchst selbst vornehmen. Aus dem berühmten österreichischen Schmuckkristall-Unternehmen stammen auch die Kristalle, die den einzigartigen Donaukreuzer zieren werden. Während der Hauptsaison wird das Kristallschiff dreimal täglich, in der Nebensaison zweimal täglich zweistündige Fahrten von Passau ins Donautal absolvieren und seinen Fahrgästen ein ganz besonderes Erlebnis bieten.

„MS Donau“ heißt das 78,5 Meter lange und 11 Meter breite Passagierschiff des größten Donaureeders derzeit noch. Ab 7. Mai wird es unter neuem Namen, der allerdings noch nicht feststeht, erstmals auf die Reise gehen. Vom alten Schiff werde nicht mehr recht viel übrig bleiben, sagt die Geschäftsführerin der Passauer Reederei Wurm & Köck, Margit Reischl-Noe. „Mit hunderttausenden Kristallen machen wir das Schiff zur schwimmenden Kristallwelt, zum Juwel der Donau“, sagt Andreas Altmayer, vom weltgrößten Schmuckkristall-Hersteller Swarowski mit Sitz im österreichischen Wattens. Altmayer entwarf die Grundidee und setzt federführend diese vieltausendstündige Handarbeit um.
