After Zebulus and trampas gave me good advice on how to improve or just change the pictures, I now started to try out any tool that I have ;-)
For this picture I used two layers.First I desaturated the background and then fitted in the coloured butterfly. But that didn't turn out the way I wanted it to be. This time the colours of the butterfly weren't more striking. So I fiddled around with that picture and came up with changing it into a crayons drawing.
I like this version because it looks like a drawing in those very old field guide books.

Hope you like it, too.
Please let me know your opinions as you know I'm willing to learn...
regards, Heike

hi heike.
glad to see you are still experimenting.

you have the germ of a decent image but you have went mad with the desaturation slider.
pushing it too far to the right causes this speckled effect. in some cases it works unfortunately not in this case.
try moving the slider a fraction at a time so that you can see the effect and stop where you feel it is ok.

try cutting the butterfly out with the magnetic lasso and cutting it as a new layer. make sure you lock this layer.
work on the other layer and then merge them. this should keep the butterfly as is and the bg layer turned to b/w.

take a look at this-

i did it on 2 layers. blurring only one layer.

trial and error.
it is not the end of the world if you make mistake. just make sure you learn by it.

onwards and upwards.
Brian
