Die Tauben sind gedrungen gebaute Vögel mit kurzem Hals und schlankem Schnabel. Die Nasenlöcher werden von einer Wachshaut bedeckt. Beim Trinken tauchen sie den Schnabel bis an die Nasenlöcher ins Wasser und saugen dieses hoch. Taubenmännchen und Weibchen unterscheiden sich in der Regel äußerlich nur geringfügig. Die Männchen sind etwas kräftiger in der Statur und in ihrem Verhalten und Gebärden aktiver. Die Hälfte der Muskelmasse von Tauben dient der Fortbewegung in der Luft. Die also in erster Linie für den Flug ausgerichteten Tauben sind daher sehr leicht, aber trotzdem stabil gebaut. Ein robustes Brustbein schützt den Brustkorb. Die Knochen sind innen hohl. Die Nahrung wird im Kropf vorverdaut und gelangt von dort in den Magen. Um die Verdauung zu unterstützen, fressen sie, wie alle Körnerfresser, zusätzlich kleine Steinchen. Das Federkleid besteht aus ca. 10.000 Federn. Diese sind in erster Linie gute Isolatoren und unterstützen zudem die Leichtbauweise von Tauben. So können sie eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von ca. 160 km/h erreichen. Die Ursachen für den guten Orientierungssinn der Tauben sind wissenschaftlich noch immer nicht endgültig geklärt.

The pigeons penetrated built birds with short neck and slim bill. The nostrils are covered by a wax skin. When drinking they dip the bill to the nostrils into the water and suck this highly. Pigeon males and females differ usually outwardly only slightly. The males are somewhat more strongly in the stature and in their holding back and bearing more active. Half of the muscle mass of pigeons serves progressive movement in air. Thus primarily the pigeons aligned for the flight are very easy from there, but nevertheless stably built. A robust breastbone protects the thorax. The bones are inside hollow. The food is before-digested in the Kropf and arrived from there into the stomach. In order to support digesting, they, like all Körnerfresser, eat additionally small Steinchen. The feather/spring dress consists of approx. 10,000 feathers/springs. These are primarily good insulators and support besides the lightweight construction way of pigeons. So they can reach a maximum speed of approx. 160 km/h. The causes for the good sense of orientation of the pigeons are scientifically not yet finally clarified.
