This is one of the five main protestant churches of Hamburg, St. Micheal's church, called Michel by the people of Hamburg. It is dedicated to the archangel Michael. A bronze statue above the entrance shows Michael fighting against the devil.
Back than the 132m high baroque spire was an important landmark for ships cruising down the river Elbe. Today it is still an impressive landmark, visible across a remarkable distance, when you're heading towards Hamburg on a ship.
This church was built in 1786 and reconstructed twice, after a fire in 1906 and after the bombings of WWII.
Today it offers 2500 seats and is the biggest church of Hamburg.
The spire is covered with copper. Since 1983 renovation work at the spire, the roof and the nave is ongoing.
On this image it looks like the "Michel" is standing right between the houses. But there is a church square around the church.
I took this photo standing on top of the spire of the Gothic Revival St. Nikolai's Church in Hamburg. This church now lies in ruins, serving as a memorial and major landmark of the city.
To learn more about that church and its history follow this link to the English Wikipedia.
PP: sharpened, straightened, adjusted contrasts slightly, adjusted shadows, mid-tones and brightness, used gamma correction, reduced noise, added borders, sharpened again before resizing.
I was born and raised in Hamburg. In my childhood the spire of St. Michael's church was covered with green patina. I can't wait to see this patina reappear. I don't like the dark copper colour and reacted somehow joyfully when I saw the patina coming back at the very top of the spire's roof. :-)
Thanks for having a look. Have a fantastic weekend.
Kindest regards, Britta |

Nice overview of Hamburg. The tower certainly springs into view and gives a more dynamic touch to the horizon.

PS: I want to congratulate you for your honest and witty critiques I read lately...

Hallo Britta,
Thomas
