[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I finally had the time and opportunity to do a few
macro-shots this year again.

The Hoverflies i found were great for that as they
normally remained on the flower long enough to get
close and take a couple pictures.

Aperture, exposure time and focus are done manually,
with the use of the built-in flash and no tripod.

Episyrphus balteatus, usually called the
Marmalade fly, is a relatively small hoverfly (9-12mm)
of the Syrphidae family, widespread throughout all
continents. Like most other hoverflies it mimics a
much more dangerous insect, the solitary wasp, though
it is a quite harmless species. The upper side of the
abdomen is patterned with orange and black bands. Two
further identification characters are the presence of
secondary black bands on the 3rd and 4th dorsal plates
and of faint greyish longitudinal stripes on the
thorax.

The Marmalade fly can be found throughout the year in
various habitats, including urban gardens, visiting
flowers for pollen and nectar. They often form dense
migratory swarms, which may cause panic among people
for its resemblance to wasps. It is among the very few
species of flies capable of crushing pollen grains and
feeding on them. The larva is terrestrial and feeds on
aphids.

As in most other hoverflies, males can be easily
identified by their holoptic eyes, i.e., left and
right compound eyes touching at the top of the head.

Hi Thorsten,
A fine bright and clear picture. Nicely sharp well composed. The bright yellow flower is a nice eye catcher for the fly. Well capture and presented. Great macro image.
Hans

Great Insect Close-up with nice colors,DOF,focus and details.

Hi, Thor. Nice macro shot. these require a lot of patience to get it right.well composed and focused. The blurred yellow flower gives color to the composition. Cheers and TFS.

Hallo Thorsten,
'willkommen im Makroclub'
Interessantes Portrait mit tollen Farben.
Ich sehe dich grade mit der riesen Kamera, Linse und obendrauf noch den Blitz vor diesem winzigen Tierchen hocken und höre jemanden sagen: 'Achtung Aufnahme - jetzt bitte mal lächeln!
Hat geklappt. Gut gemacht.
Gruß,
Thomas

This reminds me of a art nouveau hood ornament I saw in a book somewhere. Looks as if illuminated from inside. Absolutely super clear shot!
(One of my rare visits, lol) - hope you are well, Thor!
Cheers
