Crete Lasithi Greek Orthodox Church

I kow this is respect of quality not the best picture I posted to TL but I would not withhold you from this view….

During my Cretan holiday in 2003 unfortunately I didn’t owned a digital camera but with my good old Minolta 300si made lots of pictures; about twelve films in fourteen days. Nowadays we laugh about that amount 432 images is the average of two days now. Nevertheless in respect of analogue photography there were some nice pictures from that beautiful island in the Mediterranean like this one from a Greek Orthodox Church at the Lasithi plateau. ‘Normally’ Greek churches have blue roves but this one has a stunning red one!

N.B. For my Greek friends: can you decipher the text on the wall taken at Gortys (Γορτυς) ? :) Here in my WS

Crete

Crete (Greek Κρήτη Kríti; Ottoman Turkish گريد, Turkish: Girit; Latin Candia, Creta) is the largest of the Greek islands at 3220 sq. miles and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean Sea.
Crete was the centre of the Minoan civilization (ca. 2600–1400 BCE), the oldest civilization in Europe.

History of Crete

Little is known about the rise of ancient Cretan society, because very few written records remain, and many of them are written in the undeciphered script known as "Linear A". This contrasts with the superb palaces, houses, roads, paintings and sculptures that do remain.

Though early Cretan history is surrounded by legends (such as those of King Minos; Theseus and the Minotaur; and Daedalus and Icarus) that have been passed to us via Greek historians/poets (such as Homer), it is known that the first human settlement in Crete, dating to the aceramic Neolithic, introduced cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and dogs, as well as domesticated cereals and legumes.

Crete was the centre of Europe's most ancient civilization, the Minoan. Referred to often as the 'cradle' of European civilization.

Lasithi

Lasithi (Greek: Λασίθι) is the easternmost prefecture on the island of Crete, to the east of the prefecture of Heraklion. Its capital is Agios Nikolaos, the other major towns being Ierapetra, Sitia and Neapoli. The mountains include the Dikte to the west and the Sitia Mountains to the east. The Sea of Crete lies to the north and the Libyan Sea to the south.

Ciao Hans, great composition with warm mediterranean colors, great graphic effect, very well done, again a nice sunday to you, ciao Silvio

HI Hans,
Indeed a lovely place. As Sweety, I also think you got very good quality with the scan. Clours are very nice and warm and the scene is beautiful. I wish I could see this one day :)

However I think the image has a slight cyan cast (maybe my sceen is not as good)... Anyway I tried a ws and I really hope I didn't ruin your image....

good work Hans!

Hi Hans,
Really love this one.
The Greek Orthodox Church is so well contrasted against the blue blue sky .. Excellent colors, light with nice POV. Have a nice sunday.
Best wishes.
Lopa

Hallo Hans,

Leuk idee alweer.

Hallo Hans
Mooie postkaart vanuit Lasithi.

Hello Hans!

What a surprise , A red roof on a Hellenic church ! I thought they were all blue(^_^).

Simple frame matching well with the simplicity of the composition and building. The image is just a bit too soft in my humble opinion.

Have a great day !
Robert

Hi Hans
Very beautiful photograph. Colours are stopping the eyesight. I like the composition of this photograph. Particularly red flowers on the left. Nice they are complementing the whole. Greece is forming a relationship with the white and blue colour. And at you suddenly he is and red.
Anna

Well, it appears I was right. You DID post a photo of a church :-).
Not the sharpest of your work but very colorful.
And you were a novice back then :-).
Well done
Pierre

Hi Hans,

A great traditional photo of this greek church! The warm sun light makes it look really bright and the lovely flowers give colour to the composition!

Very well done
Constantinos

Yes, you are right, a little fuzzy...but an interesting shot, an incredible chance trip to Greece! My goal is to get there one day!
Nice shot Hans!

Linder

I love the colours, composition, everything! Perfect! Well done.

Aj Hans .. als deze scherp zou zijn had je een winner gehad.Jammer...
Rob

Great colours and good control of exposure, making sure the whites aren't burnt out in the building. Strong composition although building is a little too central for me. Details could be sharper, but considering the camera this is an excellent picture.
Thanks for sharing
Mark

Hi Hans!

I must say I've never seen a photo with one of these churches, with a red roof! Maybe white or blue, but never red. I CAN'T WAIT TO GO TO GREECE, ANOTHER... 13 MONTHS! Anyways. :)

Even if the quality of the image is 'fantastic' it doesn't really matter... wen can clearly see the beauty of the image, and the colours/scene really enhance everything, and toss aside the lack of 'pure focus'. I just like this becuase those structures are some of my favourite... and the blue sky just gives it that final touch, tfs very much!

Biance.

Hello Hans,
Beautiful shot! To tell you the truth I don't think many Churches have red roofs, this is very unusual. The colors are fantastic and the POV and composition very good. I understand the loss of some quality during the scan, but still it is lovely.
About deciphering the ancient text, it is impossible for me because you must have the proper info about how these where laid out! But I was able to find a translation from a Greek Professor and this is an article of Law dealing with the rights of succession(heirs) and pledges. Specially about children, daughters and sons with different rights. I hope this will shed some light!
TFS,
Your Greek friend,
Vassilis

Gracias Hans, saludos, JL.

Hi Hans,
The interplay of colors is very stunning, nice composition and a great foto. TFS
