[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This photo is of the house of Ali Pasha, (born in 1741 at the Albanian village of Tepeleni), a brilliant, resourceful and vindictive adventurer who alternately fought and served the Sultan of Turkey. The tree in front of the restored house, is one of the largest and most old trees I ever seen. Below I give some historical and other facts about the area.
The Lake of Ioannina, or Limni Pambotis, is fed by torrents from the precipices of Mitsikeli. It is l0-ll km long, averages 3km across, and ranges in depth from 9-20m, with shallow reedy shores. The lake has an island (NISI) on which are numerous monasteries situated amid trees and flowers. One of these is the Monastery of the Prodhromos(St. John the Baptist) to the E of the little island village. Its most ancient parts (13C) are the katholikon and the E aisle. It was restored in the 16C, the 18C frescoes in the 19C. In the 16C Monastery of Pantaleimon, near by, Ali Pasha was killed on 17 January 1822; the bullet marks on the floor witness to his assassination. The whole island is registered by the Greek Archeological Service as a place of archeological significance.

Nice shot with lots of history. This is a tree worth photographing, and you did a nice job. After serving for Turkey, was it the same Ali Pasha who eventually ruled Egypt and his descendants were the royal family there up to 1952 ?

Amazing tree and interesting notes! I hope that we will see one day the lake and the old monasteries that you are talking about! There is not much left of the old house! Nice documentary picture! Well seen! Michel

Well, like Flanders, Greece has a rather violent history of oppression, Βασίλη... Many stories like this one...
But no trees like this one! I'm glad you let your wife & daughter - at least I think they are ;o) - pose in front of it, for letting us see the proper dimensions of it. Good control of the light on the people, not so easy with this kind of light & shadowed patches. Well done, TFS.

Hi vassilis,
Great shot of that old tree it is huge. Your history and description of that area are great. It give the shot much more depth and significance. I am learning a lot about Greece through your photographs and notes. Thanks for sharing both.
Your freind
Jim

αν μπορείς πήγαινε φθινόπωρο ή χειμώνα ή αρχές της άνοιξης να τον φωτογραφίσεις. εδώ δεν αποκαλύπτει στο ελάχιστο την δύναμή του.

If it wasn't those person we could ask... real tytan or perspective effect? But they are the point of reference :)
Well presented! I,m sure the tree have more then 20 years!
