Nightfall of Lake Pamvotis from my village Ligiades .
The village of Ligiades forms a natural balcony over the basin of Ioannina. From an altitude of 940 meters it gazes the city of Ioannina, the lake with its small island and the summits of the 1,974m high mountain Tomaros that casts its shadow on the plain and slope of mountain Mitsikeli.
In the past there were two settlements instead of the village: “Ano Ligiades” (Upper Ligiades) where people spent their summers and “Kato Ligiades” (Lower Ligiades) where they spent the winter and where the village finally developed. The people who lived there were cattle breeders and grazed their cattle in Mitsikeli, the mountain that is still home to rich and rare fauna and flora.
The German occupation signaled in 1943 the end of this village with the mass execution of its inhabitants. But like so many other villages of Epirus, Ligiades was reborn from its ashes. Today the village, with its well-tended houses, built with the carved white stone, typical of the region, is a tranquil place that seems to have left the past behind. A horizon in the shades of blue. Down below, Lake Pamvotidha with its silvery-blue waters that reflect the sun’s rays and all around it the green carpet of the cultivated land, the forested slopes and further back the houses. The moisture of the lake rises like a thin veil and the city, half hidden by it, seems older and more mysterious. There are not many places where nothing obstructs the eye, which can wander and explore free.
One of the sights of the village is the church of Aghios Gheorghios (St. George), dating back to the 17th century. In the neighboring village of Krya Vrysi and on a beautiful location, is the Tsourapata spring, which is famous for its waters.
Suggested activities: Visit to Lake Pamvotida. Visit the cave of Perama with the nineteen kinds of stalactites and stalagmites. Visit to Miliotades and the bridge of Kamber-Agha. Mountain biking and short 4x4 trips to the neighboring villages and the mountain routes of the area. Rafting and kayak in the Aoos, Voidhomatis, Kalamas and Arachthos rivers. |
