Lindos is in the south part of Rhodes, 50km from the city. On the top of the abrupt rock is the Acropolis. Reaching it is only by the north side. The south part of the hill is 116m above the level of the sea. Going up the slope, the visitor can see dedicated inscriptions to goddess Athena engraved, whose temple is inside the walls of Acropolis.
The temple of Lyndia Athena, which was built during the 4th century BC, is visible from the sea, as it is located in the highest spot of the rock.
Looking from the Acropolis down to the cove you can see the church of Saint Paul. It is built in the spot where – according to tradition – the saint got off after a big tempest in the sea as he was going to Ierosolima. |
