By road, it is linked with Athens by the new Athens-Corinth Highway, with Patra and western Peloponnese it is linked by the Corinth-Patra Highway and with Tripoli and more generally southern Peloponnese, by the new Corinth-Tripolis Highway.
The town of Loutraki, known since antiquity for its medicinal water, owes its name to the spa baths that operated at its springs and was known during ancient times by the name “Thermae”. Later, it was acknowledged as the metropolitan centre of touristic Greece and of course, as the first therapeutic centre.
During the summer period, the population of Loutraki exceeds 100,000. The local inhabitants are mainly occupied in the tourism industry and at the same time in the developing light manufacturing industry, craft industry and agriculture. The local industries are mostly involved in bottling mineral water and making confectionery items, two products for which Loutraki is renowned.
The modern history of Loutraki begins in 1847, when the organized development of the original settlement around the hot water springs, started, whereas in 1934, along with Perachora and other smaller settlements, the Municipality of Loutraki – Perachora was established. However, the substantial development of Loutraki started after 1928 when the first Casino in Greece began operating in Loutraki. From 1936, Loutraki becomes a “Spa Centre”, earning the title of the first Lithiasis Centre in Greece, as well as in the broader area of the eastern Mediterranean. During the last decades, the springs of Loutraki have drawn the attention of the international medical world, as they are considered to be comparable to the famous springs of VICHI, EVIAN and PERRIER. |
