[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The freshwater lake Amvrakia (Limnaia, Limni Stanou or Valtos), is situated about 1000 m north-west of lake Ozeros. It is developed across the tectonic graben of Agrinio at the place of the fault. The lake covers an area of about 1420 ha, has a circumference of 31km, maximum length of 13.8 km, maximum width of 3.8 km and a maximum depth of 40 m. The lake is supplied by water from its drainage basin which is about 112 km2. It presents strong changes in the water level, that are attributed to the strong karstic character of the general area, as well as to high evaporation rates during the summer (Verginis & Leontaris, 1978).
From a thermal point of view Amvrakia is a warm, monomictic lake. According to the study of Overbeck et al. (1982), it belongs to the Sulphate type, in contrast with the other lakes of Aitoloakarnania that belong to the Carbonate type. The absence of Phragmites australis from the upper infralittoral zone of the lake is of importance and is probably due to the high content of sulphate ions in the lake.
Macquis vegetation dominates the south-west side of the lake, including species Pistacia lentiscus, Arbutus unedo, Erica arborea, Phyllirea media, Quercus ilex, Q.coccifera and Laurus nobilis etc., while in some places olive trees are grown for cultivation. At the other sides of the lake where alluvial deposits occur, cultivated fields mainly with Nicotiana tabbacum extend almost up to the lake side. On the shores of the lake aquatic grassy vegetation (Nastrurtium, Veronica etc.) is developed. At the low depth of the lake (0-1.5 m) the vegetation is characterized by species Myriophyllum spicatum, Vallisneria spiralis, Najas marina and Rannunculus trichophyllus etc. At the southeastern part of the lake the soil is sandy and grassy vegetation dominates. The same vegetation is also present at the eastern side of the lake to the west of the national road. The area between Agrilo and Linovrochi (SW of the bridge) is mainly rocky, with olive trees and macquis, with a narrow sandy part at the shore, where
Vitex agnus-castus dominates. Vitex agnus-castus also occurs sporadically in the area near the bridge of the national road, where the main vegetation is grassland.
