KALARRITES (ΚΑΛΑΡΡΥΤΕΣ), is a stone made traditional village located in Epirus, 55km away from Ioannina, the county capital, up in the mountain chain of Pindos. The village is one of the well-known Tzoumerkoxoria, which took their names by the mountain Tzoumerka that they lay on it. Kalarrites, on an altitude of 920m, seem like the time has stopped: beautiful springs with clear water, cobblestone pavements, traditional stone made houses full of colourful flowers, bridges and of course local people famous for their hospitality make the scenery look like a fairytale.
Kalaritians were also known for the art of silver-making. Many of them like Tzimouris and Bafas worked on Ionian islands after the village was destroyed in 1881. |
